Meet Mortesse

Regarded as a sort of cryptid by some and deity by others, little is truly understood about the enigmatic beings known as the Mortesse.
Unlike species such as the Carriopod, who are known to be friendly companion animals to both humans and Simitye alike, Mortesse are fully intelligent, and prefer to keep to themselves. They orginate from a separate plane of existance known as Elysium, rumored to be the fabled garden of Eden, that no mortal can say for certain truly exists.
While sightings are rare and its debated on if they truly occur, Mortesse have been known to linger around funerals. Whether they are guiding the dead to their final rest or simply drawn to death is unknown. They're notably absent when the death of a truly wicked being occurs in any case. It's also said that when these beings bring spirits with them to "visit the living" for brief periods of time, and thus some peoples aware of Mortesse do pray to them in hopes of seeing their loved ones once more.

Simitye seem to consider Mortesse somewhat of an opposite to themselves. While the Simitye believe the dead should be honored and left alone, some people seek out the Mortesse to contact or manipulate the dead. This breaks the beliefs of Simitye, creating a tense relationship. It is unknown if these conquests to contact the dead are successful however.
