Meet the Carriopod

Carriopods are an ancient species that are fondly called natures clean up crew. Often considered to be close friends with simitye, they will eat any decaying matter they can get their hands on from dead leaves to carrion!
They are versatile, able to live on land, underground, or even in the deep sea making them well known all over the world. Food can sometimes end up being scarce for them with competition from other scavengers being a constant, so when they do find food they will eat and eat until there is nothing left. Sometimes they will eat so much that afterwards they cant move.

Simitye have formed a bond with these creatures however as they are wonderful at keeping graveyards clean. They will eat the carrion that ends up there, dead leaves or trees, and even the moss growing on stones. They also can clean the bones that simitye keep close in their dens, and they dont just eat the flesh off, their saliva is a disinfectant that helps them digest bacterias. It can kill nasty viruses and other things that could make someone very ill.

Carriopods are so vast, that it turns out there are endless color patterns and types of them out in the world!

TRIVIA:
-A group of Carriopods is called a "Wake"
-Carriopods are a conglobating species, meaning they can roll in a ball to protect themselves or roll around to travel faster!

head features:

Eyebrow Antennae:

All Carriopods have antennae on their eyebrow muscles! They can have one set of two, or two sets totalling four! These antennae are used to sense and feel out their environment given that their eyesight is very bad!

Simple eyes:

Carriopods have simple compound eyes that help them see better in the dark. Regardless of this they still have poor vision and are almost blind. The antennae on their head make up for this lack of sight.

Flexing Jaw:

Carriopods have uniquely shaped teeth that are thick, large, and slightly curved for cutting into the flesh of their food. Their jaw is also flexible and able to move, allowing their teeth to rotate at will so they can rip into food.

Limbs and body:

All Carriopods have body armor. This body armor is very important to their anatomy! It provides them a natural shield for all kinds of needs. It not only protects them from predators, but it can also protect them from the elements as well. It's been documented that carriopods in places with frigid winters can hibernate by rolling in a ball and freezing on the outside, while the inside stays insulated until they defrost.
This armor is so strong its said that bullets bounce off of it. They will roll into a ball for multiple reasons. To hide from  extreme temps, to hide from threats like predators, to roll around to get somewhere faster, or even to try and hide. Most often this rolling trait however is used for protection. It even protects their young, as their babies are born similar to marsupials - via a pouch.

Carriopods also have 6 limbs on them. 2 smaller arms, 2 larger arms, and 2 legs.
  • the 2 smaller arms are for eating food
  • the 2 larger arms can be used to collect more food while they eat
  • they can also use the 2 larger arms to walk on all fours if they want to
  • normally carriopods walk in a biedal fashion
  • the pouch they carry their young in only forms around mating season! but when it does, the 2 larger arms are often used to protect it!
  • also small note that they normally do not have ears!

Size Comparison

Carriopods are about half the size of an adult simitye on all fours! Though thats if the carriopod is standing bipedal!

It means they can easily get around a simitye's home and make for great companions!
